The plans on Telcel Amigo (prepaid) 3G data, including the SMS activation codes, have been revised. In addition, the data allowances have been doubled, in a temporary promotion that runs until Jan 15th, 2012.
Choose a level
There are now three levels of data access plan: Bajo, Medio, Alto (low, medium, high). The difference between them is the amount of the data transfer allowance (and therefore the price).
Each level is also available for different periods: 1 hour, 1 day, 2 days, 7 days, 15 days, or 30 days.
Alto
The Alto level is basically the old plan, at the same prices. There are new codes to activate it. For example previously you could text "BAT30" to 5050 (and it'll probably still work for a while). The new code is now "ALTO30" (for 30 days access at 499 pesos), ALTO15 for 15 days, etc, down to ALTO1H for one hour (12 pesos).
Medio
The "Medio" level has about two-thirds of the data allowance of ALTO (even less for short periods), for about 80% of the price. So "MEDIO30" normally gives you 2GB (except during the promotion, see below) for 399 pesos. Not a great deal unless you really know you need less data.
Bajo
The "Bajo" tariff is an even worse deal, a small fraction of the ALTO rate for a large fraction of the price. You could use "BAJO1H" for 5 pesos for a cheap one hour test but it only gives you 10MB of data. ALTO1H gives you ten times as much data for only 12 pesos. There really has to be a special reason to use the BAJO rate.
Double Data Promotion
For a temporary promotion, all data plans have double data allowance. For example the ALTO30 plan has 6GB, rather than 3GB. This promotion ends Jan 15th, 2012.
Online Activation
Currently, the online activation page on the Telcel customer account portal isn't showing the new rates and tariffs. Activating it online should be the same as the ALTO rates, until they update it.
Tax and Further Information
All the rates I've quoted include IVA tax at 16%, as does the updated Telcel page that containsthe full list of rates (in Spanish): http://www.bat.telcel.com/planes_internet_amigo.html
In San Felipe, and other "border" areas (such as the whole of both Baja Californias) the IVA tax rate is only 11%, so it'll actually be a bit cheaper - 477.49 pesos instead of 499 pesos for the ALTO30 rate.
